Recycling Fuel Canisters

Fuel canisters containing isobutane fuel used for camping are very difficult to recycle. To give our guests options, Mast will collect and recycle these items. Canisters accepted for recycling will include ONLY those that contained isobutane fuels, like those used for MSR and JetBoil stoves.

Propane canisters WILL NOT be accepted. This includes 16 oz. Green Coleman Propane Tanks.

Important Notes:
  • If steel is accepted for recycling in your store’s local area, please put in your recycling or drop off at the recycling center. If it is not accepted in your local area, send it to the Support Facility for recycling.
  • The canister can only have contained isobutane fuel.
  • The canister must be empty of fuel.
  • The canister must be punctured by the guest — if canisters are not punctured, they will not be accepted. For safety purposes, Mast Store employees WILL NOT puncture any canisters in the store.  Guests can puncture canisters at home by using a church key to make a hole in the bottom of the canister, or a hammer and nail to do the same.
  • Before accepting a fuel canister from a guest, employees should examine it to confirm it is punctured.
  • If the canister is punctured, use a permanent marker to write “PUNCTURED” on it somewhere it is easily legible. This notation indicates that the canister can be crushed at the recycling facility.
