The Asheville location has been a spectator to much of this mountain city’s history from its position along the Old Buncombe Turnpike. Some of the earliest retail establishments date back to the mid 1800s when George Mears constructed a store that hosted a number of businesses including Army Surplus, the Mears Daylight Store, and Jay Mears Shoe Store. It was ravaged by fire in 1943. That same year, Fains Thrift Store purchased the building and remodeled it for its new location. They remained in the building until 1995 when Southerlands Furniture and Spa Sales moved in. The Mast Store in Asheville opened in 1999.
